Ancient Gliding Beast

Was reading New Scientist today and came across what has to be one of the coolest, and most utilitarian names for an animal*, the Volaticotherium antiquus, "ancient gliding beast" is a kind of sugar glideresque mammal that soared through the air before birds - well possibly, they're not sure of the date.

I'm thinking of changing my name to "Ancient Gliding Beast". Man, I love New Scientist.

*which is sort of given away by that title

My favourite animals have non-utilitarian names: the Spangled Drongo (how kitsch!), the Wandering Whistling Duck (what a carefree fellow he is!), the Giant Jungle Prawn (I imagine something like Alien), the Darkling Beetle (scary).

All wonderful names, Steve. Particularly the Spangled Drongo and the Darkling Beetle.

I checked out the blog, very cool, I didn't know you did comics. Also read your interview with Sean Williams, very illuminating.

Hi, Trent, just started with the comic, which is basically just quipping to clipart...

Nevertheless, I'm getting some positive feedback on it, and it amuses me.

Cheers,

Steve
